Home décor for assisted living in Georgia

Decorating your Assisted Living apartment in Atlanta GeorgiaA new home for a senior may mean moving into an assisted living apartment in Georgia and redecorating.  Assisted living apartments in Atlanta are allowing seniors the ability to express their personal tastes in home décor.  An apartment style living may be an adjustment for a senior who was possibly previously living in a large home.  For this reason, the furniture and decorations in their home may not be able to be used in the apartment.  Large items may clutter a smaller assisted living apartment or make the space feel smaller than it actually is.  Decorating with large pictures, vases, side tables and other home décor items will be potentially dangerous if they cause a trip hazard or block portions of walkways and hallways within the apartment.  Assisted living is designed to maintain a senior’s independence while assisting with daily living and making life easier for a senior.  Complicating the living experience with the wrong furniture and home décor is not advisable.  Many assisted living apartments are just a simple designed space with a bedroom, living room, bathroom and eat-in kitchen. The decision what should happen with the home items from a larger house should be ultimately the senior’s decision, but family and assisted living workers should support the senior in the transition and with determining what will happen with the large household items, which cannot be taken to the assisted living apartment. Thing that may not be a good idea to take to a smaller assisted living apartment:

  • Large Bed and Bedroom Suit
  • Large Dining Room Table and many chairs
  • Large Sofa
  • Large appliances
  • Large paintings or other wall decorations

Keeping it simple for the senior will help them to be able to clean and maintain their assisted living apartment with ease.  The more things that are brought into the assisted living apartment mean that there will be more to clean and maneuver around.  Selecting a comfortable chair that is easy to get in and out of is important in the living room area.  A senior will need to have furniture that is both pleasing aesthetically as it is practical for the needs of a senior.  If purchasing new furniture consider the size of the room and how easily a senior can get onto and off the furniture.  Very low sitting furniture items are not recommended because they will be difficult for a senior to get out of.  There are some specially designed furniture items which provide assistance to the senior to get out of the chair.  You may want to consider this option in an assisted living apartment.  Some assisted living facilities in Atlanta will have some rules with regard to how the decorations can be hung in the apartment and what holes may be placed in walls to anchor the decorations.  Be sure to follow the rules of the assisted living facility and carefully consider the ability to get the furniture and other decorations into the assisted living facility.  Some of the smaller items will be easy to bring into the assisted living apartment, while other home décor items will require a little more patience and effort to bring into the apartment.
