Keeping your house in good repair is the responsibility of every homeowner. If you need some help doing the little repairs that tend to come up from time to time you might consider hiring a handyman. A leaky faucet is a relatively simple repair. Usually, all you need to do is twist off the aerator and replace the washer. Some of us are handy and others just do not have the desire to do their own repairs. A handyman is the perfect solution for taking care of the minor repairs that need to be made in your house.
A handyman is someone who is adept at doing many different household tasks. Most handymen know a little bit about plumbing, electricity and construction. A handyman can replace a leaky part in the toilet, install a dimmer switch or build a ramp for easy access to your house. You do not always need to hire a plumber, electrician or carpenter for small jobs around the house.
While a handyman is sometimes considered a jack-of-all-trades, a trained carpenter might be a better choice for some projects. If you want to hang cabinets in the kitchen and make sure they are secure and will not fall down when you load them with dishes, a carpenter would be a good choice. If you want to frame a wall to enclose an open space, again, the carpenter is a better choice.
Seniors that live in apartment buildings usually have access to a handyman that does work in the building. If you are renting and something goes wrong with your dishwasher, you can usually call the handyman who can fix the problem. You can also find a handyman by checking the ads in some of the local publications. Some handymen post their services on bulletin boards in the supermarket.
It is to the senior's benefit to develop a good working relationship with a handyman that does good work. You should keep their number handy. When the toilet stops working or you need to hang a ceiling fan, you will not have to call an expensive plumber or electrician. Instead, pick up the phone and call the handyman.
