QUICK OVERVIEW: Also known as a Congregate Living Health Facility (CLHF), each provides a combination of housing, personalized supportive services and health care. These residential facilities provide care for individuals who cannot live independently, but who do not yet require 24 hour Skilled Nursing care. NOTE: Residential Board & Care / Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) provide Assisted Living care in a residential setting, usually in a home with a capacity of no more than 6 beds.
APPROPRIATE FOR: The Senior who
• Is alert, but unable to safely live on their own
• Is confused or forgetful, needing assistance. There may be a separate Alzheimer's area in the facility.
• Uses a walker or cane, and can get to social rooms and activities. Wheelchairs and scooters are sometimes accepted.
• Needs some assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, eating or toileting, in a hotel-like setting.
• Requires monitoring of medications
• Enjoys activities, recreation and outings
• Has chronic medical conditions and physical challenges, or may need incontinence care
• Needs transportation for medical or personal reasons
• Requires meal preparation, laundry and/or housekeeping
• May need Alzheimer's, Dementia or care with Parkinson's
SERVICES PROVIDED: Assisted Living is designed for those needing help with their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, medication dispensing and incontinence care, for both ambulatory & non-ambulatory residents. Large facilities may have private apartments in addition to shared and private rooms. Some facilities also offer Alzheimer's and/or Dementia care sections.
COST RANGE: $18/hour and up
FUNDING SOURCES: Private Pay, some Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) policies, Veterans Benefits, or a combination of these sources.
