QUICK OVERVIEW: A state-registered, federally regulated Home Health Agency (HHA) is usually the provider of this in-home medical and/or nursing health care. Care is provided by a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN); sometimes complementing the work with other health professionals.
APPROPRIATE FOR: Seniors who are not able to take their own medicines because of confusion and/or physical impairment. Senior would need more than just minimal assistance with their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), and cannot move freely throughout the house, even with a walker, cane, scooter or wheelchair.
SERVICES PROVIDED: In-home health care must be prescribed by a physician, and can include services such as physical therapy and occupational therapy. A more intense level of care depends on the assistance needed with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as eating, bathing, using the toilet, etc. A home health aide can also administer medications under the supervision of a nurse.
COST RANGE: $25/hour and up
FUNDING SOURCES: Private Pay, some Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) policies, Medigap, or a combination of these payment sources.
